Every color service is quoted for your hair at a color consultation, never from a list. Balayage, highlights, all-over color and color correction all need that consultation 24 to 48 hours before the color appointment, so we can do a test strand and see how your hair takes the color before we commit.

What shapes your quote:

  • Length and thickness. More hair takes more product and more time.
  • Condition. Fragile or over-processed hair may need a gentler, slower plan, or care first.
  • Your starting point. Virgin hair, old color and box dye lift differently; corrections are planned in stages.
  • The result you want. A soft, low-maintenance balayage is a different job from bright, all-over blonde.

How long balayage lasts between visits

Refresh every 6 to 10 weeks

Balayage is painted, not placed in foils from the root, so it grows out without a hard line. You can often stretch the time between full appointments with a gloss or toner refresh in between. All-over color and gray coverage need the root touched up sooner, because the regrowth shows.

Keeping color fresh in the 757 sun

Virginia Beach is hard on color: strong sun, salt water and pool chlorine all fade it and turn blondes brassy. My rules:

  • Wash with a sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo.
  • Use purple shampoo on blonde or highlighted hair once or twice a week.
  • Deep condition once a week.
  • Use a heat protectant before styling, and a hat or UV spray on beach days.
  • Wet your hair with fresh water and a little conditioner before the pool, so it absorbs less chlorine.
  • Book a gloss when the tone starts to fade, instead of waiting for a full appointment.

How much should I tip for balayage?

Tipping is your choice. In the US, 15 to 20 percent of the service price is a common salon tip, and color is no different.

Does balayage damage your hair?

Any lightening changes the hair, but balayage is one of the gentler ways to add brightness because it usually lightens less hair than full highlights, and not from the root. I check your hair's condition first, protect it during the service and finish with toner and conditioning. If your hair is fragile, I will suggest a slower plan.

How long does balayage last?

The lightened pieces stay light until they are cut off; what fades is the toner. Most balayage looks its best with a refresh every 6 to 10 weeks, often just a gloss. Because it grows out without a hard line, you can often go longer between full appointments.

Can you fix box dye?

Usually, yes, but it takes planning. Box dye builds up in layers, and dark box dye is the hardest to lift. At your consultation I look at your hair, test how it responds and explain how many visits it may take. I would rather do it in stages than damage your hair to get there in one day.

What does a toner do?

Toner adjusts the shade after lightening. It takes out yellow, orange or brassy warmth, adds shine and makes the color look finished. It also fades over time, which is why a quick gloss or toner appointment between full color visits keeps balayage looking fresh.
