What should I bring to my appointment?

Bring a few photos of the result you want, and a photo of anything you do not want. For long services such as extensions, color or keratin, wear something comfortable and bring water and a phone charger. For event hair, send your inspiration picture when you book. Book your visit online.

Should I come with clean or dirty hair?

Come as you are for most services: every Dominican blowout starts with a wash and deep conditioning in the studio. For a curly cut, come with your hair in its natural state, without a fresh blowout, so your curl pattern can be seen. For color and keratin, follow the instructions you get at your consultation.

How long do appointments take?

It depends on the service and your hair. A cut or a blowout is the shortest; color, keratin smoothing and extensions are long appointments that can take several hours. You get the time at your consultation or when you book. See every service on the services page.

Prices and payment

See all services

Why don't you list prices?

Because every head of hair is different. The price depends on your hair's length, thickness and condition, and on the result you want, so your quote is set at a consultation and you know it before any work starts. Color, balayage, highlights and color correction need that consultation 24 to 48 hours ahead for a test strand.

How much do hair extensions cost?

The cost of extensions depends on the method, how much hair you need for the length or volume you want, and maintenance. Keratin bonds and Brazilian knots are priced differently, and a few face-framing strands cost far less than a full head of length. You get an exact quote at a free consultation. Read how much hair extensions cost for what changes the price.

How much hair extensions cost

How much does a Dominican blowout cost?

A Dominican blowout is quoted for your hair, because length, thickness and how much detangling it needs change the time it takes. Call 757-478-9908 or book through Vagaro to see the service and time. Learn what the service includes on the Dominican blowout page.

How much does a keratin treatment cost?

The price of a keratin treatment depends on your hair's length, thickness and texture, because they change how much product and time it takes. You get your quote at a consultation before any work starts. Read who it suits on the keratin treatment page.

Keratin treatment page

How much does balayage cost?

Balayage is quoted after a color consultation, because the price depends on your hair's length and thickness, how much lightening you want and whether a correction is needed first. The consultation is booked 24 to 48 hours before, with a test strand. See balayage and hair color.

Balayage and hair color

What payment methods do you accept?

Cards and mobile pay. For event and bridal parties of more than 3, a 10% deposit holds the date. If you have a question about paying for a large service such as extensions, ask at your consultation.

How much should I tip my hairstylist?

Tipping is your choice, never a condition of good service. In the US, 15 to 20 percent of the service is a common salon tip, and some clients tip more for a long or complex appointment.

Do I tip if the owner does my hair?

Most people today tip the person who did their hair, owner or not, because the work is the same. The old rule said you do not tip the salon owner; it is still your choice.

Do I need to pay a deposit?

For event and bridal hair, parties of more than 3 pay a 10% deposit to hold the date.

Hair extensions

Keratin bond extensions

What types of hair extensions do you offer?

Two methods: keratin bond (K-tip) extensions and Brazilian knot extensions. Keratin bonds attach small strands one by one and suit fine hair and long length; Brazilian knots are braided in with no glue or heat and add fullness. Tape-in and clip-in extensions are not offered. Compare them on the keratin bond and Brazilian knot pages.

Keratin bondBrazilian knot

What is the difference between keratin bonds and Brazilian knots?

Keratin bonds attach tiny strands of hair to your own with a keratin bond that is melted and shaped around each strand; Brazilian knots braid wefts into small sections, with no glue or heat. Keratin bonds are the most discreet and suit fine hair; Brazilian knots add a lot of fullness and are moved up as your hair grows. Eugenia helps you choose at a free consultation.

Which hair extensions look the most natural?

The ones matched to your hair: color blended in more than one tone, texture that matches yours, density that suits your own hair and bonds placed where they cannot be seen. A cut after install blends them in. Read what makes extensions look natural.

What makes extensions look natural

What is the healthiest type of hair extension?

The healthiest extension is the one sized to your hair and maintained on time. Keratin bonds spread the weight over many tiny strands, which suits fine hair; Brazilian knots use no glue or heat. Damage usually comes from extensions that are too heavy, left in too long or removed at home, not from the method itself.

Do extensions damage your real hair?

They should not, when they are matched to your hair, applied with the right tension and weight, maintained on time and removed by a professional. That is why your hair's strength and scalp are checked first, and why you will be told to wait if your hair needs to recover. Read about keratin bond care.

Keratin bond care

How long do hair extensions last?

Keratin bond extensions typically last 3 to 6 months before removal or reapplication. Salt water, chlorine, sleeping on wet hair and heat at the bonds shorten the wear.

Can I swim in the ocean with extensions?

Yes, with a little planning. Braid your hair loosely before you go in, rinse with fresh water as soon as you come out, condition the lengths (not the bonds or knots) and dry your hair fully before you sleep. Salt and chlorine dry out extension hair, so frequent swimmers need more conditioning.

How do I wash my hair with extensions?

Wash with your head tipped back, smooth shampoo down the lengths instead of scrubbing, and use conditioner from mid-length to the ends, away from the bonds or knots. Then dry the roots completely. See the full routine on the Brazilian knot page.

Brazilian knot page

How do I sleep with hair extensions?

Never go to bed with wet extensions. Dry your hair fully, then sleep with it in a loose braid or low ponytail on a satin or silk pillowcase, so it does not tangle at the nape. Brush gently each morning, from the ends up.

Can I get extensions if I have thin hair?

Often, yes. Keratin bonds are tiny and spread the weight, so they suit fine and thin hair well, as long as the amount of hair is matched to what your own hair can carry. If your hair is breaking or your scalp needs care, you will be told to wait. Read extensions for volume.

Extensions for volume

Are extensions good for curly hair?

Yes, when the extension hair matches your curl pattern so the two blend when your hair dries naturally. Brazilian knots grip textured hair well and use no heat, which suits curly clients. See the Brazilian knot page.

Brazilian knot page

Can I color my extensions?

Extensions can be toned or colored by a professional, but it is better to plan color at the start. At your consultation, the extension hair is matched to your color, or pre-colored for highlights or dimension. Do not color them at home.

How are keratin extensions removed?

At the studio: each bond is softened with a removal solution and slid off the strand, then your hair is washed and checked. Pulling or cutting bonds out at home is the fastest way to lose your own hair with them.

Will my hair grow with extensions in?

Yes. Your hair keeps growing at its normal rate, which is why keratin bonds move away from the scalp and Brazilian knots are moved up at maintenance appointments. Keeping up with maintenance protects your own hair.

Am I too old for hair extensions?

No. Extensions are about the hair you have, not your age; clients in their 40s, 50s and beyond wear them for fullness and length. What matters is the strength of your hair and scalp, which is checked at the consultation.

Who is not a good candidate for extensions?

Hair that is breaking, very fragile or recovering from damage, and a scalp that is irritated, should not carry extensions yet. Very short hair may not be long enough to hide the bonds. You will get an honest answer, and a care plan first if your hair needs it.

Do you offer tape-in or clip-in extensions?

No. Tape-in and clip-in extensions are not offered. The studio works with two methods, keratin bonds and Brazilian knots, so each can be matched closely to your hair and maintained well.

Dominican blowout

Dominican blowout

What is a Dominican blowout?

A Dominican blowout is a heat-styling technique from the Dominican Republic: a wash and deep conditioning, a roller set dried under a hood, then a round-brush blowout at the roots. The result is smooth, full and moving, with no chemicals. Read the tradition and technique.

The tradition and technique

What is the difference between a Dominican blowout and a regular blowout?

A regular blowout is blow-dried from wet with a brush. A Dominican blowout adds a deep conditioning step and a roller set dried under a hood, and only then blows out the roots with a round brush, so it is smoother at the root and fuller through the lengths. See the Dominican blowout.

Dominican blowout

Is a Dominican blowout the same as a Brazilian blowout?

No. A Dominican blowout is a styling service with heat and no chemicals, so your texture returns when you wash. A Brazilian Blowout is a brand of chemical smoothing treatment that lasts for months. For long-lasting frizz control, ask about the keratin smoothing treatment.

Keratin smoothing treatment

Is a Dominican blowout the same as a silk press?

Both straighten hair with heat and no chemicals, but the method differs: a Dominican blowout uses a roller set and a round-brush blowout, while a silk press is finished mainly with a flat iron. The Dominican blowout is the service offered at the studio.

Does a Dominican blowout damage your hair?

Not when it is done with care: it uses heat, not chemicals, so it does not change your hair permanently. Damage comes from too much heat too often on unprotected hair, which is why every appointment starts with a wash and deep conditioning and uses a heat protectant.

Is a Dominican blowout good for natural hair?

Yes. The technique was made for hair with texture, and it is a way to wear curly or coily hair smooth without a relaxer. Your curls come back when you wash. Space blowouts out to protect your curl pattern.

How do I make my Dominican blowout last longer?

Wrap your hair at night: brush it around your head in a doobie wrap, pin it and cover it with a satin scarf or bonnet. Sleep on satin, wear a shower cap, and avoid rain, steam and intense workouts. See the full routine on the Dominican blowout page.

Dominican blowout page

How often should I get a Dominican blowout?

That depends on your hair and how it holds up between visits: some clients book on a regular schedule, others for events and trips. If you want to protect your curl pattern, leave more time between blowouts.

Is a Dominican blowout good for thin hair?

Yes. The roller set lifts the root, so thin and fine hair often looks fuller than after a regular blow-dry, and it dries faster. For fullness that lasts longer, ask about extensions for volume.

Keratin smoothing treatment

Keratin treatment

What is a keratin treatment?

A keratin smoothing treatment coats and smooths the hair cuticle and is sealed with a flat iron, so hair frizzes less and dries faster for months. It softens texture rather than making hair permanently straight. Read more on the keratin treatment page.

Keratin treatment page

How long does a keratin treatment last?

Eugenia's clients typically report 4 to 5 months of smoother, less frizzy hair. It fades a little with every wash, so sulfate-free shampoo and washing less often help it last; chlorine, salt water and clarifying shampoos shorten it.

Is a keratin treatment worth it?

If frizz costs you time every morning, usually yes: faster blow-drys, less heat and fewer bad hair days in the Virginia Beach humidity. If your hair is already smooth and easy, you may not need it. Read about humidity frizz in Virginia Beach.

Humidity frizz in Virginia Beach

What are the downsides of a keratin treatment?

It is not permanent, it asks for sulfate-free shampoo and a few careful days at the start, and it relaxes curls, so it may not suit you if you love your full curl pattern. It is not recommended during pregnancy or nursing, on hair shorter than about 3 inches, or on an irritated scalp.

Is a keratin treatment bad for your hair?

Done well, on hair that suits it, keratin smoothing leaves hair softer and easier to manage. The risks come from too much heat during sealing, the wrong formula strength or repeating it too often, so the formula is chosen for your hair and the seal is done in thin sections.

Is a keratin treatment good for curly hair?

It can be, when your goal is less frizz and easier styling. Keratin softens and relaxes curls rather than removing them, and the formula strength is adjusted to your texture. Read is a keratin treatment right for your hair texture.

Is a keratin treatment right for your hair texture

Will my hair go back to normal after a keratin treatment?

Yes. Keratin smoothing fades gradually with washing, and your natural texture returns as it wears off and as new hair grows in. It does not change your hair permanently the way a relaxer does.

When can I wash my hair after a keratin treatment?

Wait as long as your stylist tells you for the formula used: many keratin formulas ask you to keep hair dry and straight for about 72 hours. See the aftercare on the keratin treatment page.

Keratin treatment page

Can I put my hair in a ponytail after a keratin treatment?

Not in the first days. Ties, clips and tucking hair behind your ears can leave dents while the treatment settles, so keep your hair down and straight until your stylist says it is set. After that, use soft ties and loose styles.

What shampoo should I use after a keratin treatment?

A sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. Sulfates and clarifying shampoos strip the treatment faster, and salt water and chlorine do too, so rinse with fresh water after the beach or pool.

Is keratin better than a Brazilian Blowout?

They are similar: both are smoothing treatments that reduce frizz for months, and Brazilian Blowout is a brand name for one of them. The studio offers a keratin smoothing treatment with the formula chosen for your hair. Ask about ingredients at your consultation.

Does your keratin treatment contain formaldehyde?

The formula used is formaldehyde-free. If you have questions about ingredients or sensitivities, ask at your consultation and you will be shown the product.

Can I color my hair before a keratin treatment?

Yes, color first: the heat of the flat-iron seal can soften fresh color, so book color, then keratin about two weeks later. Plan both at one consultation.

Why is my hair still frizzy after a keratin treatment?

Usually because of washing too soon, sulfate shampoo, salt water or chlorine, or because the treatment is fading and new growth is coming in at the roots. Very curly hair also keeps some texture by design. If frizz returns early, call 757-478-9908 so it can be checked.

Color and balayage

Balayage and hair color

What is balayage?

Balayage is hand-painted color that lightens pieces of hair softly from the mid-lengths to the ends, so it grows out without a hard line. It looks natural and needs fewer full appointments than foil highlights. See balayage and hair color.

Balayage and hair color

Is balayage better than highlights?

Neither is better; they do different things. Balayage is painted and soft, with a natural grow-out; foil highlights give more even, brighter lightening from closer to the root. One is recommended at your color consultation, based on the result and upkeep you want.

Does balayage damage your hair?

Any lightening changes the hair, but balayage is one of the gentler ways to add brightness, because it usually lightens less hair than full highlights and not from the root. Your hair's condition is checked first and protected during the service.

How long does balayage last?

The lightened pieces stay light until they are cut off; what fades is the toner. Most balayage looks its best with a refresh every 6 to 10 weeks, often just a gloss, and you can often go longer between full appointments.

How often should I refresh my hair color?

Every 6 to 10 weeks is the studio's guidance. All-over color and gray coverage need the root sooner; balayage can go longer, with a gloss in between. Sun, salt water and chlorine fade color faster in Virginia Beach.

What does a toner do?

Toner adjusts the shade after lightening: it takes out yellow, orange or brassy warmth, adds shine and makes the color look finished. It fades over time, which is why a quick gloss between full color visits keeps balayage fresh.

Can you fix color that went wrong?

Usually, yes. Brassy or orange tones, uneven color, box dye and over-processed hair can be corrected, but some corrections take more than one visit. It starts with a color consultation 24 to 48 hours ahead, with a test strand. Read about color correction.

Color correction

Can you remove box dye?

Usually, yes, but it takes planning. Box dye builds up in layers, and dark box dye is the hardest to lift, so it is often done in stages with time between visits to keep your hair strong. Your consultation includes a test of how your hair responds.

Is color correction damaging to hair?

The risk is real if it is rushed, because correction often means lifting color that is already there. That is why it is planned in stages, with conditioning care between visits, and why your stylist may stop and wait rather than push your hair too far in one day.

Why do I need a consultation before color?

So your stylist can see your hair, test a strand and plan the formula before the appointment. Color, balayage, highlights and color correction need a consultation 24 to 48 hours ahead for a test strand. It also sets your exact quote.

How do I keep my color from fading at the beach?

Use color-safe, sulfate-free shampoo, wear a hat on sunny days, wet your hair with fresh water before swimming and rinse right after. Strong sun, salt water and pool chlorine fade color and turn blondes brassy. More tips on the color page.

Curly perm

Curly perm

What kinds of perms do you offer?

Loose wave (beach wave), medium curl, tight curl and partial perms, chosen for your hair's length, texture and the curl you want. See the curly perm page.

Curly perm page

How long does a perm last?

A perm typically lasts 3 to 6 months. It grows out from the root, so the timing depends on how fast your hair grows and on your haircut; gentle care keeps the curl defined longer.

Can you perm curly hair?

Yes, if you want a different curl than the one you have: tighter, more even or more defined. Your natural pattern is looked at first and the rods are chosen to work with it. If your curls are frizzy rather than too loose, a keratin treatment may suit you better.

Keratin treatment

What is the least damaging perm?

The one matched to your hair: the right solution strength, processing watched closely and healthy hair to start with. A partial perm or loose wave also treats less hair or for less time.

What hair cannot be permed?

Hair that is heavily bleached, breaking or chemically relaxed should not be permed, because it cannot take another chemical change safely. Very short hair may be too short to wrap. If your hair is not ready, you will be told honestly.

What should I avoid after a perm?

For the first 48 hours, do not wash, tie up or brush your hair, and sleep with it loose on a satin pillowcase. After that, use sulfate-free products and a wide-tooth comb, and scrunch rather than brush. The full routine is on the curly perm page.

Braids and protective styles

Braids

What braid styles do you offer?

Box braids, knotless braids, cornrows, goddess braids and Fulani braids, plus men's braids and retwists for locs. See the styles on the braids page.

Braids page

How long can I keep braids in?

Box braids typically last 4 to 8 weeks and cornrows 2 to 6 weeks. Going past that is not worth it: new growth tangles at the root and takedown causes more breakage.

Do you braid men's hair?

Yes. Men's braids, including cornrows and braided styles, and retwists for locs. Tell us at booking which style you want and how long your hair is.

How do you protect my edges and scalp?

By never braiding too tight: if a braid hurts, say so in the chair and it will be redone. Tension at the hairline over weeks is what causes thinning edges, so the hairline gets lighter braids and gentle care.

Can I wash my hair with braids in?

Yes. Focus on your scalp with a diluted gentle shampoo, rinse well and squeeze, do not rub, the lengths. Dry your braids completely, because braids that stay damp can smell and mildew.

What is a retwist?

A retwist is upkeep for locs and twists: as your hair grows, the new growth at the root is twisted back so the roots look neat and the locs stay defined.
