Long or thick hair takes more rods, more solution and more time; colored or fine hair may need a gentler formula and closer watching; and a partial perm at the root, the ends or around the face treats only part of your hair. So your quote depends on your hair's length, thickness and condition, and on the curl you choose.

How long a curly perm lasts
3 to 6 months
A perm changes the shape of the hair that is on your head today. As new hair grows in straight at the root, the curl slowly relaxes and moves down. Most perms look their best for three to six months, and you can book a touch-up or let it grow out. What makes a perm drop sooner: washing too soon after the appointment, sulfate shampoos, rough towel-drying, high heat and brushing curls when they are dry.
The first 48 hours and daily care
The first 48 hours:
- Do not wash your hair.
- Do not tie it up, clip it or tuck it behind your ears.
- Sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase, with your hair loose on top of your head, so you do not flatten the curls.
- Skip the gym, the pool and the beach until the 48 hours are up.
Every day after:
- Wash with a sulfate-free shampoo two or three times a week, not every day.
- Use conditioner every time, and a leave-in or curl cream while hair is wet.
- Detangle with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb only when your hair is wet and conditioned.
- Air-dry, or use a diffuser on low heat.
- Refresh second-day curls with a little water and curl cream.

Can you perm curly hair?
Yes, if you want a different curl than the one you have: tighter, more even or more defined. I look at your natural pattern first and choose rods that work with it. If your curls are frizzy rather than too loose, a keratin treatment or a better curl routine may be the answer instead.
How much does a beach wave perm cost?
A loose wave perm, the one most people mean by a beach wave perm, is quoted at your consultation, because the price depends on your hair's length, thickness and condition. The consultation includes a strand test, so the quote, the timing and the curl are all set for your hair before we start.
Can sleeping ruin a perm?
In the first 48 hours, it can flatten the curl. Sleep with your hair loose on top of your head on a satin or silk pillowcase, and do not tie it up. After the perm has set, sleeping will not undo it, but a satin pillowcase and a loose high ponytail (a pineapple) keep curls fresher by morning.
What is the least damaging perm?
The gentlest perm is the one matched to your hair: the right solution strength, processing that is watched closely, and hair that is healthy to start with. A partial perm or a loose wave also treats less hair or for less time. The strand test at your consultation tells us how your hair will react before we do the whole head.
What hair cannot be permed?
Hair that is heavily bleached, breaking or chemically relaxed should not be permed, because it cannot take another chemical change safely. Very short hair may also be too short to wrap. If your hair is not ready, I will tell you, and we can plan a few months of care first.
